EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) – The parents of a man who drowned in the Chippewa River last year have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against a person who was swimming with their son.
Larry and Anita Fike allege the man in the river with their 21-year-old son, Joseph, somehow played a role in his death. Eau Claire police say they found no indication of foul play.
Joseph Fike drowned when he tried to swim from an island in the river to shore in July 2011. An autopsy revealed no traumatic injuries and determined his cause of death was accidental drowning. The Eau Claire Leader-Telegram says toxicology tests shows Fike’s blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit for driving.
The Eau Claire couple is seeking unspecified damages and attorney fees.
