The courtroom is not the only place where Jennifer Jin takes on heavy competition.

Jin, an associate on her firm’s taxation team, also is a member of the Brewcity Bruisers roller derby league. She said she was attracted to the team atmosphere and the competition, two things she also finds in her life as a litigator.

“It’s nice to have something that provides an arena for competition that is different than the courtroom,” Jin said. “They are very similar. It just gets you to sweat a different way.”

One of the things that attracted her to working at Whyte Hirschboeck was the collaborative atmosphere, Jin said. The same thing is true in roller derby.

“A lot of what we do is learn to work together and come up with strategies that we want to implement,” she said. “It’s pretty much the same thing in litigation.”

There are differences as well, she said, noting that her roller derby teammates are more free-spirited.

“It exposes me to different people with different perspectives,” Jin said. “In order to be a good trial attorney you need to be able to see the different perspectives that are out there.”

It’s that approach that drives Jin’s legal team while it handles state and local tax issues.

“There are a lot of different ways to look at the law,” she said, “and it’s interesting to see how it applies to the facts that you have at hand.”
