Plea deal reached in fatal texting crash

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (AP) – A 23-year-old Stevens Point man who was texting while driving has pleaded no contest to causing a crash that killed a man in Wood County.

John French was charged with second-degree reckless homicide.

According to the accident report, French was driving on Dec. 6, 2010, when he failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with a car. French’s sport utility vehicle then collided with another SUV driven by Robert Walker. Walker was thrown from his vehicle and died at the scene.

According to the criminal complaint, French admitted to texting at the time of the crash.

WSAW-TV reports French will return to court Nov. 12. He faces up to 25 years in prison.
