GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) – A Door County man convicted of causing the hit-and-run death of a man in a wheelchair has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Forty-year-old Mark Alan Sperber of Forestville was convicted of colliding with the wheelchair of 20-year-old John M. Kennedy last year. A witness told investigators Sperber stopped momentarily and then left the scene.

A Green Bay Press-Gazette report says Sperber had been driving a company truck. He had co-workers fix the damage the next day, telling them he thought he hit a garbage can.

His defense attorney argued that Sperber really thought he hit a garbage can, and that’s why he wasn’t afraid to enlist co-workers to fix the damage.

But Judge Mark Hammer said Sperber looked back, thought, “It’s him or me” and left.
