WEST BEND, Wis. (AP) — A retired chairman and CEO of Wisconsin Energy Corp. has been ruled incompetent to stand trial on charges he tried to kill his wife at their Erin home.

But the judge also ruled 85-year-old Charles McNeer is likely to become competent for trial, because McNeer has shown improvement during treatment at the Mendota Mental Health Institute. A re-evaluation hearing is scheduled for Sept. 6.

According to the complaint, McNeer hit his wife on the back of the head with a hammer before trying to kill himself last month.

The Journal Sentinel reports, according to the complaint, McNeer attempted to kill his wife because his health was failing and he did not think she could live alone without him.

McNeer served as Wisconsin Energy’s chief executive from 1975 to 1991.
