BARRON, Wis. (AP) — A western Wisconsin man is accused of filling balloons with gas and injuring a woman who was burned when they exploded.
Twenty-six-year-old Chad Schullo of Cumberland is charged in Barron County with injury by negligent handling of explosives, as well as two other counts. According to the criminal complaint, Schullo told investigators he filled the balloons with acetylene gas and planned to light them in front of his roommate’s window to celebrate the roommate’s 21st birthday Tuesday.
Schullo gave the balloons to 18-year-old Amanda Sarauer to hold and they exploded. The Bloomer teen suffered burns to the head, neck and chest, as well as severe hearing damage.
The Pioneer Press reports Schullo is in the Barron County Jail on $5,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled June 10. Court records did not list an attorney for Scullo.
