MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Republican Gov. Scott Walker says any concealed carry bill that emerges from the Legislature should require permits and training provisions.

Republican lawmakers are considering two bills that would allow state residents to carry concealed weapons. One would require a permit but no training. The other lays out no prerequisites whatsoever, a nod to gun enthusiasts who believe they have the constitutional right to bear arms without any restrictions.

Police are calling for permits and a database that officers could check to see if people they encounter might be carrying.

Walker issued a statement Friday saying any bill that reaches his desk should include a permit and training.

His spokesman stopped short of saying the governor would veto anything less.
