SPARTA, Wis. (AP) — An Illinois woman has been sentenced in Monroe County to life in prison for fatally shooting her ex-boyfriend.

Tammy Cole argued that her gun accidentally discharged while she embraced Vance Evans at his home in Tomah last year. Prosecutors say the 47-year-old Cole shot Evans on April 26, 2010, when he rejected her.

The courtroom was packed with family and friends of Cole and Evans during Wednesday’s sentencing. The La Crosse Tribune says Cole will also serve a 7-year consecutive sentence for attempted arson. A jury determined Cole tried to cover up her crime by trying to set Evans’ home on fire.

Cole, of Big Rock, Ill., will be eligible for supervised release in 30 years.
