MILWAUKEE (AP) — An Elm Grove priest has left active ministry while authorities investigate whether he molested a child in the 1970s.

Spokesman Jerry Topczewski tells the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the allegation was made to the Archdiocese of Milwaukee last week and turned over to the district attorney’s office. If no charges are filed, he said, the archdiocese will conduct its own investigation.

WTMJ-TV reports the Rev. Laurin J. Wenig denied the allegation in a letter to parishioners at St. Mary’s Visitation Catholic Church Saturday. He said he supports church policies for handling such situations, as difficult as they are for him personally.

According to the newspaper, the abuse claim is among a number of old allegations against priests to emerge recently, likely in response to the archdiocese’s filing for bankruptcy protection in January.
