A federal judge has sentenced a Madison man for distributing heroin.

James Britton, 26, pleaded guilty to the charge Sept. 16, according to a news release. He was sentenced Tuesday by U.S. District Court Judge James Peterson to 37 months in prison.

Britton, along with 13 other offenders, participated in a “notification” on Nov. 12, 2013, at the United Way in Madison. A notification is a presentation given to violent, repeat offenders in the Madison area. Offenders are warned that their criminal behavior must end and they are introduced to community service members who could offer assistance in doing so.

During the notification, law enforcement warned Britton that he was being watched. But about six months later, Britton began delivering heroin to an undercover officer, according to the release, making four deliveries of a total of 43 grams of heroin.
