State AG, Marquette law professor to headline treatment court conference

A conference organized for later this month by the Wisconsin Association of Treatment Court Professionals will features speeches from state Attorney General Brad Schimel and the Marquette law professor Michael O’Hear.

The two-and-a-half day conference will run from May 10 to May 12 at the Kalahari Resort, 1305 Kalahari Drive, Wisconsin Dells. Registration is $100 per day, or $250 for the whole event. For more information, visit www.watcp.org.

The event will feature state, national and local experts. Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch, State Rep. Evan Goyke, D-Milwaukee, and state Attorney General Brad Schimel will give presentations on state officials’ work to curb opioid addiction.

Douglas Marlowe, an expert from the Treatment Research Institute of the University of Pennsylvania, and Vanessa Price, of the National Drug Court Institute, will also give presentations.

O’Hear will speak about mass incarceration and his book “Wisconsin Sentencing in the Tough on Crime Era: How Judges Retained Power and Why Mass Incarceration Happened Anyway.”

Continuing legal education credits are available.

During the conference, the association will also honor Dane County Circuit Court Judge John Markson, who will receive the 2017 Aulik Award for his contributions to the state’s treatment courts.
