Happ promises to crack down on for-profit colleges

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Democratic attorney general candidate Susan Happ promises to crack down on for-profit colleges that she says prey on Wisconsin students and veterans.

Happ released a plan Friday that calls on partnering with attorneys general in other states and with federal agencies to find the best ways to address deceptive practices by unscrupulous for-profit colleges.

Happ faces Republican Brad Schimel in the Nov. 4 election.

Schimel’s campaign spokesman Johnny Koremenos said Schimel will “vigorously enforce Wisconsin’s consumer protection laws.”

Happ’s plan includes educating veterans about the perils of the for-profit college industry, which she said targets them with high-pressure sales tactics that misrepresent the true costs and value of what is being offered.

Happ said as attorney general she would seek “hefty penalties” from those that violate state consumer protection laws.
