EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) — An Eau Claire man accused of killing a 39-year-old man with a crowbar plans an insanity defense.
A public defender entered pleas of not guilty and not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect on behalf of 52-year-old James E. Olson on Tuesday.
The judge appointed a psychologist to evaluate Olson. The psychologist previously examined Olson to determine Olson’s competency to help with his defense.
The Leader-Telegram reports the findings will be discussed in court April 18.
Olson is charged with a felony count of first-degree intentional homicide in the death of Paul Oberle last year.
Olson is accused of killing Oberle with a crowbar on June 9 after Oberle returned home from working the overnight shift at an Eau Claire grocery store.
