MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The state Senate could soon vote on whether to add Wisconsin to the growing list of states calling for a constitutional convention.
The Senate committee on Financial Services, Constitution and Federalism voted 3-2 on Thursday to move forward a group of proposals from Republican Sen. Chris Kapenga. Kapenga wants Wisconsin to be the 30th of 34 needed states to call a convention to modify the U.S. Constitution to require the federal government have a balanced budget.
Democratic committee members Sens. Fred Risser and Kathleen Vinehout voted against the measures. They argued that state lawmakers should leave it to the U.S. Congress to alter the Constitution. Republican Sens. David Craig, Dan Feyen and Duey Stroebel voted for them.
The full Senate could take them up as soon as Tuesday.
