MILWAUKEE (AP) — The attorney for one of the two 13-year-old Wisconsin girls accused of trying to kill a friend as a sacrifice to the fictional horror character Slender Man has asked an appeals court to postpone their trial and move the case to juvenile court.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Tuesday that defense attorney Anthony Cotton filed an emergency petition to suspend the trial set for October. Cotton’s motion filed Friday also asks the court to reverse a judge’s decision to keep the trial in adult court. He and other defense attorneys say the adolescents suffer from mental illnesses and won’t get appropriate treatment in the adult prison system.

The girls each face a charge of attempted first-degree intentional homicide in connection with the May 2014 attack on their classmate, who was stabbed 19 times but survived.
