MILWAUKEE (AP) — A Wisconsin man was sentenced Monday to nearly 10 years in prison for leading police on a drunken driving chase that ended in a near-fatal crash.

Kevin Hutchins Jr. of Milwaukee reached speeds of 100 mph during a seven-mile police chase, the Journal Sentinel reported. Deputy Scott Griffin was critically injured when Hutchins’ vehicle bounced off of a barricade and smashed into his squad car.

Griffin fought back tears Monday as he told the judge he hasn’t been able to work since the crash. He said he continues to suffer from physical, psychological and emotional injuries, including constant pain, anxiety and depression.

“It has destroyed my understanding of myself, my world and my place in it,” Griffin said. He is seeking worker’s compensation and plans to retire from law enforcement.

The incident was Hutchins’ third drunken driving offense. He pleaded guilty last month to charges of recklessly endangering safety, fleeing and eluding, and operating while intoxicated causing injury, second or subsequent offense.

Hutchins told the court he needs punishment and help as he struggles with alcoholism. He also apologized to Griffin.
