GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — A Green Bay woman convicted of neglect in the death of her 15-month-old daughter has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Sarah Kairys, 33, previously pleaded no contest to neglect with death as a consequence. Brown County Judge John Zakowski on Tuesday also placed Kairys on 10 years of extended supervision once she’s released from prison, WLUK-TV reported.
Kairys’ boyfriend, Juan Maravilla was convicted of first-degree reckless homicide in the girl’s 2017 death. He was sentenced in August to 24 years in prison.
Kairys and Maravilla brought the girl to St. Mary’s Hospital in May 2017. Police were called because the child was covered in bruises and had what appeared to be bite marks. A blood test determined she was dead before arriving at the hospital, according to a criminal complaint.
Kairys originally told police the child fell down the stairs. Maravilla initially blamed Kairys before admitting to hitting and kicking the girl, according to prosecutors.
According to the autopsy, the child suffered multiple fractures and injuries which resulted in a perforated bowel, leading to her death.
