When Monica Mark was in elementary school, she wanted to be an author.

By the time she had reached high school, her interests had turned to journalism. And during college, she considered going on to graduate school for English.

But her career path suddenly changed when she took a course on school policy taught by two law students.

“I’d never thought about law before, but near the end of the course I met with them to talk about law as a field more generally — the kinds of things you could do with a law degree,” Mark said.

“I loved the idea of entering a field where I’d be researching and writing in-depth on a regular basis, but where the work I was doing could have an immediate, concrete impact on helping solve people’s problems and make the justice system work.”

After graduating from Yale University and the University of Wisconsin Law School, Mark secured a job as an associate at Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren.

“I really enjoy digging into a complex issue and coming up with a way to put it in writing in a way that makes it clear and easy to understand,” she said. “I’m also fortunate that, while a lot of my work is in intellectual property … I get a fair amount of variety in the subject matter I see, which means I am always learning something new.”

Albert S. Orr, CEO of Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren, said she “often goes above and beyond what is expected of her. … Eager to overcome an initial fear of public speaking, Monica pursued opportunities to present oral arguments during her tenure as a Reinhart summer associate, eventually leading to her arguing a case before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.”
