The Wisconsin Department of Corrections has completed comprehensive COVID-19 testing among its inmates and staff employees. The agency reports 1.2% of the 24,395 tests administered produced positive results.

The DOC began mass testing at all of its 37 centers in May. The testing was conducted in partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the Wisconsin National Guard.

The mass testing ended on July 1, and a report from the DOC released on July 20 provided details about the outcomes. The DOC said 296 inmates and 95 staff members tested positive, but the majority have recovered. No one in the DOC’s care and no DOC employees have died from the virus.

DOC officials said the department began a second round of testing for staff members last week. The DOC is placing the priority first on centers with high numbers of positive cases, then on centers in places with elevated case counts and finally on centers that have no positive cases in their communities or among people in their care.

The infographic below illustrates data released in the DOC’s July 20 report following the conclusion of mass testing. The latest COVID-19 case numbers can be found on the DOC’s website.
