Suzanne O’Neill, a Wisconsin State Public Defender of nearly 30 years, has been appointed as a Marathon County Circuit Court judge.

She will replace Judge Jill Falstad, who is retiring on July 3.

O’Neill has been a public defender in Marathon County since 1991, representing thousands of people accused of crimes. She has held management roles at the office since 2004.

O’Neill is a founding member of the Marathon County OWI Treatment Court and has served on dozens of committees, including the Marathon County Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee and Marathon County Criminal Justice Advisory Committee. She has also served as a past president of the Marathon County Bar Association and Marathon County Library Foundation.

In a statement, Falstad said O’Neill’s experience and leadership will serve the justice system well in solving many complex challenges.

O’Neill earned her law degree from DePaul University College of Law in Chicago. She received the Leaders in the Law Award from the Wisconsin Law Journal in 2018.
