The Dane County Jail added new decontamination equipment to help protect inmates, deputies and staff from the spread of COVID-19.

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office purchased an AeroClave Automated, No-Touch Decontamination Unit to decontaminate surfaces, cells and rooms in the Dane County Jail, the office announced in a press release on Friday. The machine sprays hospital disinfectant that can kill viruses, bacteria, mold and other microbes in large spaces.

Officials say the unit will supplement UV emitters that have been in use in the jail since March.

A spokeswoman from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately return a call for comment on how many cases of coronavirus the jail has. A report from Madison TV station WKOW on Tuesday said the jail currently had 11 positive cases among an inmate population of 400.

Dane County Sheriff David Mahoney had requested the equipment in the office’s 2020 budget.
