A lot has changed since Betty Karnes was hired in 1983 as a file clerk at Michael Best & Friedrich. Advancements in technology have greatly changed most day-to-day tasks at law offices. And, of course, email and cellphones have forever altered the way employees and clients communicate with each other.

Karnes, now a finance and accounting specialist, has not only embraced these changes but also coped with the steady growth of the firm, which has gone from two offices to 13 during her time there.

As Michael Best has expanded, her role has become more specialized. In her current position, Karnes is responsible for processing and approving expense reimbursements, accounts payable, month-end closing and balancing statements and audit requests.

“Betty’s exceptional interpersonal skills and deep firm knowledge places her as a role model, reliable group mentor and trainer. Betty stands out among her peers for offering help rather than waiting to be asked,” said David Krutz, firm managing partner.

Krutz said that every year Karnes is responsible for processing more than 10,000 expense reimbursements. He praised her work habits and dedication.

“Without hesitation, she regularly and confidently responds to any and all accounting and billing inquiries,” Krutz said.

Karnes said that the people she has worked with at Michael Best have always been fair and flexible.

“I have enjoyed being trusted to get the job done and to do it right,” she said. “The people here at Michael Best are an awesome bunch to work with.”
