Alex Seifert admittedly took a meandering route to a legal career.

But ever since he entered the profession, his commitment to the State Public Defender’s office has been unwavering. And he knows a little something about unwavering devotion: Seifert served for more than 13 years as an active-duty military mechanic in Afghanistan and Iraq.

But after stepping away from military service as an honorably discharged veteran, he completed law school. Next he began taking on public defender assignments at a law firm in Antigo. It wasn’t long before he saw that he was most eager to help those who could least help themselves. As a result, he found himself working in the Merrill Public Defender’s Office.

“(Alex) is a blue-collar worker and veteran turned fierce legal advocate,” said fellow public defender, Jessica Fehrenbach, in her nomination letter. “His non-traditional path to his legal career has given him a unique understanding of his clients and provides valuable perspective to his practice of law. His personable demeanor, legal knowledge and preparedness also make him a favorite amongst the courthouse staff.

“In just a few short years, Alex has quickly established himself as a knowledgeable, compassionate and hard-working attorney.”

This past year, Seifert has proven himself a zealous advocate in various ways, particular in his representation of 51 mental-health-commitment clients. With each client, he spends countless hours providing advice and working for the best outcome.

In his time away from the courtroom, he serves as the treasurer for the Langlade County Bar Association and is a board member for Wisconsin Judicare.

“The best part of my job is working with really talented people to help others through some of their darkest times,” Seifert said.
