MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Republican state lawmaker says Gov. Tony Evers’ order to fly over the Wisconsin state Capitol for the first time a rainbow flag representing gay pride is divisive.

State Rep. Scott Allen in a tweet Friday asked, “Is this any more appropriate than erecting the Christian flag over the Capitol?”

Allen, in a message to The Associated Press, says the rainbow flag “advocates a behavior or lifestyle that some Wisconsin residents may not condone. Therefore, it is divisive.”

Evers issued an executive order to fly the flag for the remainder of June in recognition of “Pride Month.”

Evers says the rainbow flag has become an important symbol for the LGBTQ community and publicly displaying it “sends a clear an unequivocal message that Wisconsin is a welcoming and inclusive place.”
