MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A state lawmaker says he expects both legislative houses will pass a constitutional amendment bolstering crime victims’ rights this spring.

Sen. Van Wanggaard, a Republican and one of the amendment’s chief sponsors, said on Tuesday that he has spoken to leaders in both the Assembly and Senate and he expects the houses will vote on the amendment in May.

Alec Zimmerman, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, confirmed that his chamber plans to vote on the amendment in May. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos’ spokeswoman, Kit Beyer, didn’t immediately respond to an email.

Constitutional amendments must be passed in two consecutive legislative sessions and a statewide referendum. Lawmakers passed the crime victim amendment in 2017. If the amendment passes this year, the earliest it can appear on the ballot is in the April 2020 election.
