The Wisconsin Supreme Court recently publicly reprimanded a Milwaukee lawyer over four misconduct allegations.

The disciplinary action on Friday stems from a complaint the OLR filed in July against Diann Burton, alleging, among other things, that she had practiced law in 2016 while her license had been suspended for failing to pay bar dues and failing to tell clients about her license suspension.

Burton also put herself out as working for a law firm even though Burton was a solo practitioner. Moreover, the law firm Burton used included the name of an attorney who was suspended.

The OLR had asked the justices to publicly reprimand Burton, which would not bar her from practicing but would make any decision issued in her disciplinary case public.

Burton never responded to the OLR’s complaint.

The OLR in November asked the referee in the case, Kim Peterson, to find Burton in default, adopt the allegations in the complaint and recommend that Burton be publicly reprimanded.

Peterson on Dec. 26 recommended that the justices grant the OLR’s request.

The high court on Friday agreed, publicly reprimanding Burton. The justices also ordered Burton to pay the cost of the proceeding. That amount was $533 by Jan. 15.
