Top lawyer for state insurance agency lands at Godfrey

Godfrey & Kahn recently hired the former top lawyer at the state agency that regulates the insurance market.

Zachary Bemis now works as special counsel in Godfrey’s Madison office. Bemis practices administrative law and handles regulatory matters, working in the firm’s insurance and political-law practice groups.

Bemis, who earned his law degree at the Chicago-based DePaul University College of Law in 2012, was former chief legal counsel for the state Office of the Commissioner of Insurance for nearly a year during then-Gov. Scott Walker’s administration. In that role, Bemis, among other things, oversaw the agency’s legal unit and led a cybersecurity working group.

Before that, he spent five years working in various positions within the state Legislature, including legal counsel and adviser to Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and chief of staff to state Rep. John Nygren. Follow @erikastrebel
