Evers picks new Wisconsin State Patrol superintendent

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Gov. Tony Evers has picked the next lead of the Wisconsin State Patrol.

Evers named patrol Maj. Anthony Burrell as superintendent on Friday. He will take over on Sunday.

Burrell has served as a state trooper since 1990. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2006, lieutenant in 2012 and captain of the patrol’s 11-county Northeast Region in 2015.

He was promoted to the rank of major and made deputy director of the state patrol’s field operations bureau, which oversees about 385 people and has an annual budget of $45 million, in December 2016.

Burrell is president of the National Black State Troopers Coalition and is a graduate of the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety.

He replaces former Superintendent J.D. Lind, who retired last fall.
