PEWAUKEE, Wis. (AP) — A 26-year-old man has been charged with strangling his parents’ neighbor and hiding her body in the basement of her Pewaukee condo.

A criminal complaint filed in Waukesha County says the body of 56-year-old Joanne Curley was found wrapped in a tarp in a large garbage bag under a mattress in the basement Jan. 3. An acquaintance told police she had not heard from Curley since Dec. 31.

The complaint says police found a wallet and medicine belonging to Adrian Thomas at the condo. He was arrested in Pewaukee Jan. 4. Police say Thomas told others that he was dog sitting for Curley.

He was charged Monday with first-degree intentional homicide, hiding a corpse, three counts of identity theft and operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent.
