MILWAUKEE (AP) — The number of homicides in Milwaukee has declined for a third consecutive year.

Police say that, by Sunday, 99 people had been homicide victims in 2018. That’s the lowest number of victims since 2014. The total doesn’t include killings committed in self-defense or accidental shootings.

There were 118 homicides in Milwaukee in 2017, 142 in 2016 and 145 in 2015. Mayor Tom Barrett gave credit for the reduction in violence to an initiative started in November 2017, as well as help from local residents.

The official homicide tally for 2018 is subject to change pending the outcome of current investigations, including one on Monday on the city’s south side. A man was found with a gunshot wound and died at the scene.
