NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City charter bus driver was ordered to turn over his passport while he faces charges in the death of a newlywed law clerk he’s accused of hitting and dragging down the street.
Xi Chen was arraigned Friday on misdemeanor traffic charges. The 50-year-old is free on bail. His next court date is Jan. 24.
A lawyer for Chen didn’t immediately respond to messages. Lawyer Jin Wu told the Daily News he’s never seen a prosecutor ask for a passport on a misdemeanor charge.
Police say Chen accelerated into a left turn near a cluster of Manhattan courthouses, hitting 28-year-old Kimberly Greer as she crossed the street after work.
Greer clerked for U.S. Magistrate Judge Katharine H. Parker. The judge called her a “vibrant young woman with an excellent legal mind.”
