NEW YORK (AP) — A writer who sued a double-decker bus company after getting hit and seriously injured has been awarded $85 million by a jury.

The lawyer for Devan Sipher says the jury in Manhattan made its decision in the civil case late Tuesday following a trial that had started in late October.

Sipher, who has written wedding columns for The New York Times, was walking in a Manhattan crosswalk in July 2015 when he was hit by a Gray Line bus making a turn.

Attorney Howard Hershenhorn says Sipher was severely injured and has required 11 surgeries.

Gray Line did not respond to an email seeking comment.

Hershenhorn says the bus company settled with Sipher after the trial for a confidential amount of money.
