When Pauline Williams got out of college, she wanted to work in the legal field, but didn’t want to be a lawyer.

But then a lawyer, Donald Molter, hired Williams as his personal secretary when she was 19 years old. As time went on, her role changed as the firm expanded and adapted itself to the use of new technology.

Forty-one years later, Williams is still playing a big role as the office manager for Waukesha-based Municipal Law & Litigation Group.

“It’s always fascinating,” Williams said. “I like dealing with the municipal law because it’s such a different aspect of the law.”

As office manager, Williams maintains financial records for the firm, prepares statements and supervises staff.

“In other firms they have separate people who do each of these jobs,” said John Macy, a lawyer at the firm. “We are very fortunate to have someone who is not only willing to accept all of this work but also is able to do.”

Williams said she enjoys not only her work but also the people she works with.

“The firm has always been very good at what they do and they’re a very well-known municipal law firm,” she said. “From my involvement with them and the attorney’s and their interaction with the clients, everything has been so good that I’ve stayed with them.

“They’ve treated me well and I’ve always aimed to be very knowledgeable about what I do and what I know and help them.”

Molter said Williams has always been someone who needed little guidance. Molter is most grateful to Williams for the help she gave him when one of his sons died in 1993.

“Most importantly she helped me through it with her kindness and patience,” he said.

Remzy Bitar, a municipal and civil rights litigation defense attorney at the firm, said Williams has a wealth of knowledge and can provide a quick answer to any question.

“Pauline has maneuvered every challenge the firm has had, from changes in health care and other benefits, to growth with new attorneys and clients, to staffing changes, to physical moves of the office,” Bitar said.
