For Kimberly Finnigan, a legal career came about through sheer happenstance.

Finnigan graduated from Marquette University with a degree in history and enrolled at the Milwaukee Area Technical College, in a post-bachelor’s certificate program. Her goal was to decide what she wanted to do before going to graduate school.

She got a job at a law firm, where she fell in love with the law. She moved on to work in a corporate setting as a contract administrator for a software company, but soon figured out she missed being in litigation.

“I really enjoy the varied topics that I get to learn about,” she said. “I also enjoy the federal rules of civil procedure and understanding and figuring out the nuances of those rules.”

Finnigan joined the Halloin Law Group 12 years ago, just when Scott Halloin was starting the practice. She has been a paralegal there ever since.

“Whatever I put out the day before, I’m always striving to perfect it that much more,” she said.

Stephanie Wengel, legal assistant at Halloin Law, called Finnigan a “captain” who keeps the law firm going.

“Her skills and knowledge are what set us apart from any other law firm and help us continue to be a successful business and good individuals in our daily lives,” she said.

By joining a law firm when it started, Finnigan was able to work in a variety of positions even as the firm expanded.

“I get to be involved in the business side of the firm as well as the actual practice side of the firm,” she said. “Scott’s a great boss in that he gives me a lot of autonomy, so he lets me do a lot of research and figure out things on my own and then present my findings to him.”

Molly Stacy, a lawyer at the firm, said Finnigan is always prepared to help. She’ll even take calls on her days off and read documents late into the night.

“She will give up her time to assist anyone in the office, even if that means she needs to stay late to finish the work she had planned on performing that day,” she said “With how knowledgeable and up-to-date Kim keeps on changes in local rules and court preferences, she is the ultimate resource for any filing or correspondence leaving our office.”
