Emily Gorces, who earned dual degrees in international studies and Spanish from Butler University in 2006 has long envisioned herself working in the legal field.Afte rmoving back to Wisconsin, she found a position at Lopez Law Group as a bilingual legal assistant.

Gorces and her supervisor, Glorily Lopez, joined Murphy Desmond, and Gorces advanced to become a paralegal. The pair continues to work together and Lopez, shareholder and immigration practice group leader, calls Gorces “indispensable and wonderful.”

“She performs at an associate attorney level, she’s an incredible researcher, she’s organized and she has critical thinking skills and superior writing skills,” Lopez said. “She’s been an invaluable asset to our practice, particularly under the Trump administration but even before that.”

Gorces said the combination of law, foreign language and the politics of immigration make her work an ideal fit for her.

“As the mother of two young girls, my work schedule is fortunately very accommodating to their needs, and lets me pursue both my career and my family comfortably,” she said.

Gorces handles the “legal legwork” for a full range of immigration cases, including family-based petitions, employment-related cases, inadmissibility waivers, permanent-resident cases, naturalization and citizenship cases, petitions for certain victims of violence, consular visa hearings and removal and deportation cases.

She recently became one of the first State Bar of Wisconsin Certified Paralegals, a designation that recognizes her knowledge and experience, as well as her commitment to professional development. She is registered as an American Immigration Lawyers Association member and is a member of the Legal Association for Women.

Gorces said she enjoys working in an “ever-changing, high-stakes field where our work makes a very tangible difference in our clients’ lives,” as well as having a diverse clientele and helping families, people, and small and large companies alike.
