When Jane Ford Bennett saw an opportunity to join the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1997, she became eager to do just that after learning from a friend about the support offered by the department.

After 21 years, Ford Bennett, now a senior grader for the law school, said the department’s general atmosphere helps keep the job enjoyable.

“Everyone has been very supportive,” she said. “My supervisor and my boss, they’re all very supportive about helping you move up in your position. I’ve been here 21 years and all of my coworkers are all very supportive. We all try to help each other whenever we need it.”

Bennett’s responsibilities include administering exams and planning, managing grade reporting, processing student enrollment and troubleshooting, serving as a resident expert on the university’s data system and managing the dean’s list.

Bennett is known for her calm demeanor during stressful situations. In 2016, she had emergency surgery just before the start of exams. Returning two days after her procedure, she handled everything without a hitch.

“They were calling me at home asking where to find something and I just decided, you know what, it’s easier to come into work and show them where to find something instead of just directing them over the phone,” she said.

Kevin Kelly, associate dean for student and academic affairs at the UW Law School, said Ford Bennett is pleasant no matter how difficult things are in the office.

“She just focuses on what needs to be done,” he said. “There are no negative aspects to get around or any friction. It’s all professional and pleasant.”

Whenever students have difficulties with classes or enrollment, Ford Bennett and her fellow workers will work with them to help find ways to make sure things go smoothly.

“The students are very grateful,” she said. “They’re extremely supportive and when you help them they really show their appreciation. It’s always nice when you feel appreciation from the students and coworkers or the dean or the faculty.”
