Stepmother found guilty in toddler’s death in Oneida County

RHINELANDER, Wis. (AP) — A northern Wisconsin woman has been found guilty of killing her 20-month-old stepson.

Jurors found 30-year-old Ellen Tran of first-degree reckless homicide in the death of Avery Edwards in April 2017. Tran’s attorneys attempted to place the blame for the toddler’s death on his father, Trung Tran.

WJFW-TV reports the Oneida County jury reached a verdict after less than two hours of deliberation Thursday. No date has been set for Tran’s sentencing.

Trung Tran took the stand briefly earlier this week and refused to answer questions, citing his constitutional rights against self-incrimination. He’s charged with two lesser felonies in his son’s death.
