SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A judge has ruled that a Massachusetts lawyer charged with sexually assaulting three women involved in legal cases will face three trials.
Prosecutors said the allegations faced by Amherst attorney James Martin should be tried together because they are similar.
Martin’s defense attorney countered that folding the allegations into a single trial would cause “extreme prejudice” and The Republican newspaper reports that a judge last week agreed.
One woman alleges Martin forced her to perform a sex act after she went to his office to discuss her divorce. Another said Martin, who was her court-appointed attorney in a criminal case, assaulted her in an alley in Holyoke.
Martin is also charged with assaulting a woman involved in a foreclosure case.
He is free on personal recognizance and has denied all charges.
