A Madison firm has filed a sex-discrimination lawsuit against Lawrence University on behalf of a student.

The suit, filed by Paul Kinne of Madison-based Gingras, Cates & Wachs, alleges that Lawrence failed to respond to reported assaults that occurred on school premises even though it was aware of them. That failure, the lawsuit alleges, led to the plaintiff’s being sexually assaulted, according to a new release.

The plaintiff, a student, reported two incidents against a male student but was told no action could be taken until Lawrence had more reports about the same student. The suit alleges the school had received other reports about the student, according to the release.

Lawrence University later promised the student would be removed from campus. He was not, and the plaintiff had to quit her campus job while the investigation was pending.

The plaintiff is seeking emotional-distress damages, punitive damages, and economic damages from Lawrence.
