A former Milton attorney who was suspended for embezzling money from his firm is attempting to get his law license back.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court suspended John Koenig’s license for two years in 2015, finding that he had embezzled nearly $40,000 over four years from his former employer, Monona-based Kohls & Associates. The justices also ordered him to pay more than $12,000 worth of restitution to the firm.

Koenig, who earned his law degree from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School in 1990, had been licensed to practice in Wisconsin since 1997.Jo

Koenig filed a petition for reinstatement in April. He has been working full time since November 2013 at Janesville-based Morgan Truck in a sales and customer-service position, according to court documents. He has also paid full restitution to his former firm.

Should his license be reinstated, he plans to practice elder law again, according to court filings.

The high court appointed Kim Peterson as the referee who will preside over the reinstatement proceeding. Peterson will hold a public hearing on Koenig’s request for reinstatement and make a recommendation to the justices.
