MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee’s police chief says an officer was killed and another injured when their squad car crashed as they chased a reckless driver.

Chief Alfonso Morales says 23-year-old Charles Irvine Jr. died when the police car left a northwest side street and rolled over near an overpass Thursday evening.

Morales says Irvine’s 36-year-old partner is in stable condition. He has not been identified.

Authorities have not said which officer was driving.

The Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission ordered former Chief Edward Flynn to change the department’s pursuit policy last July to allow officers to chase reckless drivers and those tied to drug dealing.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the other driver is in custody.

Irvine is the first Milwaukee police officer killed in the line of duty since 1996.
