A disciplinary hearing for a Madison attorney who is also mayor of Fitchburg starts on Thursday morning.

The Office of Lawyer Regulation charged Jason Gonzalez, who was then an alderman, with nine counts of misconduct last year. The alleged misconduct stems from his handling of two clients’ cases and includes failing to do legal research, failing to communicate with or respond to a client and failing to diligently pursue a client’s case.

The OLR is asking the Wisconsin Supreme Court to publicly reprimand Gonzalez.

The two-day final hearing in the case starts at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Wisconsin State Bar Center, 5302 Eastpark Blvd., Madison, and is scheduled to continue into Friday. The high court has appointed James Boll to be the referee in the matter.

Gonzalez is being represented by Peyton Engel of Hurley, Burish and Stanton in Madison. The OLR is represented by Assistant Litigation Counsel Jonathan Hendrix.

After the hearing, Boll will issue a recommendation, and the Wisconsin Supreme Court will review his suggestions and issue a final decision in the matter.
