RACINE, Wis. (AP) — A Racine man accused of slashing his live-in girlfriend’s throat after the couple smoked crack cocaine has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Fifty-one-old Lewis Caples pleaded no contest in October to first degree reckless injury, as a repeat offender. He was originally charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide.

The Journal Times reports that a pre-sentence investigation recommended eight to 10 years of prison, followed by three to four years of extended supervision. Racine County Circuit Judge Faye Flancher sentenced Caples to one year shy of the maximum sentence and ordered him to serve 10 years of supervision after his release.

Caples is accused of attacking the victim from behind after she told him to leave their home. The woman suffered a six-inch laceration on her neck.
