MILWAUKEE (AP) — A woman who was raped by a Milwaukee police officer responding to her 911 call in 2010 will receive $2.5 million to settle her lawsuit against the city.

Milwaukee’s Common Council approved the settlement Tuesday on a 14-1 vote. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the settlement is among the city’s largest paid to a single person in recent history.

Police Chief Edward Flynn fired officer Ladmarald Cates in December 2010 after Cates sexually assaulted the woman, who was 19 at the time.

Cates faced charges in federal court and is serving a 24-year prison sentence after being convicted of violating the woman’s civil rights by engaging in aggravated sexual abuse while acting under the color of law.
