MILWAUKEE (AP) — One of two men convicted of firing the gunshots that killed a 5-year-old girl as she sat on her grandfather’s lap in Milwaukee has been sentenced to 65 years in prison.
Milwaukee County Judge Jeffrey Wagner told Carl Barrett Jr. during sentencing Thursday that he had “shattered the security (and) the peacefulness of a community” when he opened fire on the house and killed Laylah Petersen in November 2014. Authorities say Barrett and Arlis Gordon wanted revenge for a slaying and mistakenly shot at the wrong house.
Laylah, her sister Destiny and her grandparents were sitting in the living room when bullets pierced the picture window. Gordon is scheduled for sentencing next week.
