A Milwaukee attorney has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for three counts of theft from a client’s estate.

Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge Michael Aprahamian sentenced attorney Thad Jelinske on Wednesday. Jelinske had pleaded no contest to the three charges of theft in a business setting.

Jelinske, a senior partner at the Milwaukee firm Mawicke & Goisman, was charged with three counts of misdemeanor theft in September.

The Office of Lawyer Regulation filed a complaint against him shortly after, seeking a year-and-a-half suspension of his law license for 23 counts of alleged misconduct involving his handling of the estate of a deceased Brookfield real estate developer. Jelinske had been named the estate’s personal representative and trustee.

The charges in the 29-page OLR complaint allege that Jelinske should have known that the estate was insolvent. Yet, for months he wrote checks from the estate’s account to pay various expenses, including checks to himself and to pay his wife’s credit card bill.
