HAYWARD, Wis. (AP) — Two people died in rural Hayward this week after an apparent murder-suicide.

Authorities say the woman who was killed was the clerk of courts in Sawyer County.

Sheriff’s officials say 56-year-old Claudia Bergan died Wednesday after she was found in her home with a gunshot to the chest. Fifty-eight-year-old Dennis Meyer died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation is ongoing.

WDIO-TV reports that authorities say Bergan and Meyer both lived at the home.

Sawyer County Circuit Court Judge John Yackel says Bergan worked for the county for nearly two decades and was the court clerk in recent years. He called her a dedicated public servant.

The incident is still being investigated.
