The Wisconsin Supreme Court has decided to reinstate the license of a Milwaukee attorney who was suspended nearly 17 years ago for stealing money from a client.

Jane Edgar had been suspended for two years in 1999 for stealing money from a client in a divorce proceeding. She repaid when she was caught and has since sought treatment for mental-health troubles that contributed to the theft.

The court also suspended her license retroactively for an additional year in 2003 for misconduct, including failing to keep a client reasonably informed and failing to cooperate with an Office of Lawyer Regulation investigation.

Edgar had also petitioned the court for reinstatement in 2010. The justices rejected that request two years later.

Edgar asked the court again in June 2015 to reinstate her license, and a hearing was held in February on the matter.

The justices on Friday reinstated Edgar’s license, stipulating that she be monitored for two years by an attorney approved by the OLR.

Edgar plans to practice as a guardian ad litem in children’s court.
