FOND DU LAC, Wis. — The father of a teenager killed nearly 26 years ago broke down on the witness stand in Fond du Lac County as he recounted the last conversation with his daughter.

Dave Beck was the first witness Tuesday in the trial of Dennis Brantner, who is accused of killing 18-year-old Berit Beck. She disappeared in July 1999 after stopping in Fond du Lac while on her way to a seminar. Her body was found weeks later in western Fond du Lac County.

Dave Beck told his daughter as she left their Sturtevant home to “be careful and stay safe.” He recalled her answer. “Don’t worry Dad. All the people up north are good.”

Defense attorney Craig Powell told the jury that Brantner cannot be found guilty of the crime because too much evidence collected in 1990 is missing.
