CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (AP) — Sixteen tablets have been installed in different rooms and cells at the Chippewa County jail at no cost to the local government.

WQOW-TV reports that the tablets were installed last week in an effort to cut down on the paper trail that follows many of the services needed by the inmates, including communication with jail officials and in-jail bank accounts. The tablets also allow inmates to access an online law library and to report sexual assault.

The tablets can be used by any inmate for up to 45 minutes at a time. Inmates won’t be able to go onto the Internet, but they’ll eventually be able to pay for email access.

The startup costs were covered by an outside company, CBM, which provided the tablets.
